Bawdily Harm is the three-person fighting group found on the Three Lions Stage at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival. Their act features sword fighting, flaming torch fighting, comedy, innuendo, and a lot of audience interaction. The three performers are Cliff Lawson, Emily Brattin, and Nick Marion, all Kansas City Renaissance Festival veterans. Though they make light of it in the interview, what they do requires a massive amount of rehearsal and experience. Cliff is a nationally recognized fight choreographer, and Nick Marion has been a competition fencer. You are guaranteed to have a good time and help be part of the show, when you attend one of their performances at the Kansas City Renaissance Festival.

Hopelessly in love with the art of illusion for more than 30 years, Matthew Gurley has spent much of his life learning practicing, and perfecting his magic and his stage performance. Matthew was in high school when he was introduced to the Kansas City Renaissance Festival.
In the course of his experiences with the Festival, he has played all manner of roles including working for artisans and crafters, and in 2005 teamed up with Dr. Dumpe, a 30 year veteran of the Faire. Matt has escaped from a straight jacket while suspended upside down 12 feet above the stage, walked in a bed of broken glass, fire-eating and even the Human Blockhead stunt.
Matt’s wife Dani, and his daughter, Claire are both performers at the Faire. You will find Claire on stilts and can find her on Facebook at “Claire Up There Entertainment”.

We had the pleasure of interviewing some of the cast and crew from "A Thousand Words" playing now at the Nebraska Repertory Theatre. It is an amazing show that is the first all-student written, designed and performed as a result of a process called "devised theatre." The play is a lovely and touching story told by "Grandpa" who is the main character and puppet in the play. Overall there were over 100 puppets in this play, along with live actors onstage. It is an amazing play that you will most likely not see something like it again, so get your tickets now and go!
We spoke with Jill Hibbard, Puppet Designer and Fabricator; Andy Park, Director; Kate Schini, Assistant Director; and Michaella Deladia, Actor and also a writer and designer of the devised theatre process.
We thank all of our guests for coming onto the podcast and talking to us. As well as a special thank you to Julie Hagemeier, General Manager of the Nebraska Repertory Theatre, and a special thank you to Jillian Carter at Appearing Locally. Both Chris and Sheri have been partnering with Appearing Locally to assist with reviews for the Appearing Locally Blog located here: www.appearinglocally.com.

A special Thank You to John Larson and Daniel Reardon for allowing us to bring you this special radio adaptation of Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol.
A Christmas Carol Radio Show
Produced by John Larson
Adapted by Daniel Reardon
Missouri Science & Technology
2016

From Missouri S&T, 2016:
"The play is inspired by the book “A Christmas Carol,” which Dickens published in 1843. The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge’s transformation from a bitter miser to a kinder man after visits from three ghosts on Christmas Eve. The performance is styled after old-fashioned radio broadcasts and includes handmade sound effects and an original score featuring Christmas carolers.
“It was somewhat of a family tradition growing up to watch ‘A Christmas Carol’ each holiday season in my parents’ house, so I have been well acquainted with the story for years,” says script writer Dr. Daniel Reardon, an assistant professor of English and technical communication at Missouri University of Science and Technology. “This version of the story will follow the original novel’s narrative as though the listener is reading it, and the narrator plays a larger role than usual.”
Faculty, staff and students at Missouri S&T make up the performers for the play.
• Besides writing the original radio script, Reardon also directs the production and plays the role of Scrooge
• John Larson, KMST program director, produced the performance and plays nephew Fred Holywell and the Ghost of Jacob Marley
• Jeanne Stanley, associate professor of theatre at S&T, is the narrator
• John Francis, KMST general manager, plays Bob Cratchit
• Dr. Jossalyn Larson, assistant teaching professor of English and technical communication at S&T, plays the Ghost of Christmas Present, Belle and Janet Holywell
• Elizabeth Reardon, educational technology professional at S&T, plays the Ghost of Christmas Past and Mrs. Cratchit.
Missouri S&T students provide various crowd, children and caroler voices. The original musical score is written and performed by Owen Smith, a senior in physics from St. Louis.
Victorian-era Christmas carols are conducted by Lorie Francis and David Cress, assistant teaching professors of music at S&T, and performed by the Missouri S&T choirs, Wind Symphony and Brass Band. Dr. Michael Bruening, associate professor of history and political science at S&T, performs on the pipe organ."

You will both laugh and be touched during this podcast! The Platte River Bard visits the Self Expressions Gallery in the historic downtown of Nebraska City, Nebraska. We visit with Honey Lynn Larson-Self, who is the new Owner and also contributing Artist at the five-room Gallery, as well as Terry Hager, who is one of the 30+ Artists who feature their work there.
Honey Lynn Larson-Self has been an avid self-taught painter and creative person all of her life. At the age of 11, she earned a grand champion purple ribbon at the Cass County Fair with one of her painted saws, but wasn’t able to take it to State because she had to be 12 years old to do so. She most recently owned Honey’s Artwork Studio Bee in Nebraska City, which gave group painting lessons, and has now incorporated those painting lessons into the Self Expressions Gallery. Please check the website below for all of the Gallery's events.
Terry Hager is an award winning painter from Fargo, North Dakota, and an US Veteran. He originally studied architecture and soon found that he was drawn to change his degree to a BA in Arts from the North Dakota State University. He was a Teaching Assistant at UNL where he received his Masters degree. He has taught Art at UNL, North Dakota State University, and also privately.
For all of the teachers at our schools, please be sure to listen, because there is an opportunity to work with Self Expressions Gallery to feature art from your kids. The Gallery wants to cultivate art with the kids as well as adults, so you won't want to miss this discussion.
Both Honey Lynn and Terry’s warm demeanor and sense of humor made them fantastic guests on the Platte River Bard, and we thank them for taking the time to share with us.
The Self Expressions Gallery is located at 713 Central Avenue, Nebraska City, NE. 402-209-0463.
