Join us for a very fun and totally off-the-rails conversation with one of our favorite Creatives! Jamie Bullins, who is a master of all theatre related trades, heads up the Angels Theatre Company's Playwriting Collective and is gearing up for their 8th Annual First Flight Festival. The First Flight Festival will feature 12 locally written plays, monologues and even a musical which have been through a creative development process with Angels Theatre Co.
Don't miss Auditions for First Flight, which are coming up soon: May 19th (6:30pm-9pm) and 20th (10am-4pm) at the Unitarian Church of Lincoln (6300 A Street) to be a part of these many works!
The First Flight Play Festival will be held at the UNL Studio Theatre on the 2nd floor of the Temple Building at 12th and R Street on July 13th-16th and July 20th-23rd.
I also just want to say that if you haven't heard Chris (or Sheri) laugh hysterically before, you will hear it on this podcast!
Jamie Bullins has an MFA in theatrical design and scenography from the University of North Carolina/Greensboro and came to Nebraska from Kennesaw State University where was an Associate Professor for 17 years. He has also held positions at Auburn University and the University of Florida. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Costume Design at the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film. He has a plethora of Director credits, and just this year has Directed plays at Lincoln Community Playhouse, Doane State College as well as Costume Design for Wesleyan University and Scene Design at Angels. Artistic Director, Kevin Colbert of the Lofte Community Theatre and Actor, Jennifer Gilg talk with us about their upcoming play, Wit, ("W;t") written by Margaret Edson. This play won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize, and is a heartfelt play is about a strong and intelligent woman, Vivian Bearing (played by Jennifer Gilg) who realizes she is in the last two hours of her life due to her battle with ovarian cancer. But don't let the premise scare you away! This play is full of heart and humor as Vivian explores what makes life worth living, what achievements look like when faced with the reality of death, and how relationships are such an important part of every humans' story.
And if the writing and acting of this play isn't already enough, Jennifer Gilg, an accomplished local actor, went "all in." We talked to her just hours after she had her head shaved for this role and she carried on brilliantly. She has taken this role on and owned it. So join us for a great conversation with more talented local Creatives who are bringing everything they have to this endearing play.
Wit opens May 5th at the Lofte Community Theatre and runs until May 14th.

Benson Theatre is bringing us a fresh take on a Shakespearean classic, Twelfth Night, which is an adapted play by Ryan Kathman, MFA. This production will be just one weekend on April 28th, 29th and 30th. And to make the experience of this wonderful production even more unique, Ryan Kathman adapted this play for two actors. Ryan and Delaney Jackson will be the two versatile actors playing all of the parts in the play. Both actors will alternate playing the principle and secondary characters in a wide range of styles and voices.
We talk with Moira Mangiameli and Ryan Kathman about how they are bringing this play to life! And we get to hear a little bit about their theatre experience as well!

What a lovely conversation with two talented Creatives, Ellen Struve and Amy Lane, PhD. You'll hear their incredible friendship and collaboration on Ellen's staged reading of Old Bat. This play is co-produced by Benson Theatre and the Great Play Theatre Commons PlayFest and is a free staged reading on March 23rd and 24th at the Benson Theatre. This staged reading has been reimagined into a different style of staged readings and it is sure to lure you in to another world and story.
Ellen's fanciful style and realistic perspectives will become centerstage in this fun play. We talk about her process of writing plays, and how she and Amy became friends.
It’s always an honor to talk with local Creatives who have brought so much to our Arts Community and to see Benson Theatre and Great Plains Theatre Commons collaborate for local playwrights.

The excitement is brewing! Opera Omaha is ending this season with The Marriage of Figaro, and we had a lovely conversation with Michael Adams and Mary Feminear, who play the Count and the Countess in this beloved opera. Mary and Michael are married in real life as well as their characters onstage, and it made for a great interview. Our conversation was cut short because of technical problems, and we hope to talk with them again in the future.
Both of these Creatives are immensely experienced and talented and it was an honor to talk with them.
Don't miss this famous and timeless opera, which is Directed by Dean Anthony and Conducted by Steven White.
Performances are March 31st and April 2nd and ticket prices begin at $19. You can get your tickets to this beloved opera, The Marriage of Figaro at ticketomaha.com.
Opera Omaha also offers their Opera in Conversation, The Art of Comedy: "Comedic Tropes at Types" which will be held at the Blackstone Theatre March 21st at 6PM. And for a talkback after the opera, Opera in Conversation: "After The Curtain Call" on April 4th at the Benson Theatre at 6PM. These events are free of charge.

Emily A. Rollie Ph.D., Director of Men on Boats at UNO Theatre talks about this history reimagined production made up of non-binary and female cast members! In addition, we learned about her other role as an Intimacy Choreographer, which is timely and a newer concept to the theatre stage. Dr. Rollie also serves as an Educator and Faculty Member of the Washington Central State University theatre department, as well as an Associate Faculty Member for Theatrical Intimacy Education. She has written numerous articles, has served as an Artistic Director at the Independent Actors Theatre, and has a Master's Degree in Theatre at Central Washington University and her Ph.D. at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Dr. Rollie has many more credits and talents to her name and can be found on her website: https://www.emilyrollie.com/. And suffice to say, she has brought her vast talents to this production at UNO Theatre. In addition, it's perfect timing, since March is Women's History Month to bring such a talented female to our state who has been a resource and advocate for women in theatre, and a gender and sexuality educator. She was the Assistant Director of Troubling Violence Performance Project (TVPP) a group dedicated to opening lines of communication about issues of relationship violence through the performance of personal narratives.
There's so much to unpack here: Men On Boats is a history reimagined play about the 1869 exploration of what is known today as the Grand Canyon, as well as learning about Intimacy Choreography from such a talented Creative. Join us for a great conversation with Emily A. Rollie, Ph.D.!
Men On Boats by Jacklyn Backhaus opens February 23rd through March 5th.
Performances are February 23-25th, and March 2-4 at 7:30PM; and Feb 26 and March 5th at 2PM.

The Bard crashed the rehearsals of the Benson Theatre, and had the rewarding opportunity to talk with Kathy Tyree, Jared Cernousek, Kerri Forrester, and Moira Mangiameli! Their show "American Son" opens Thursday, August 18th and will run from the 18th-21st and the 27th-29th. Join us for some really deep conversations about race and perspective in this show, which was written by Christopher Demos-Brown. We were so honored to talk with Director, and Omaha's Queen of Soul, Kathy Tyree; the talented classical singer and now Actor, Kerri Forrester; the recent UNO Graduate of Theatre and Directing, Jared Cernousek, and the Benson Theatre's Executive Assistant, Moira Mangiameli. Moira tells us about the new Benson Theatre and it's creation, orchestrated by Executive and Founding Director, Amy Ryan.
American Son made its world premiere at Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, MA in June 2016. The play won the 2016 Laurents/Hatcher Award for Best New Play by an Emerging Playwright. It then premiered on Broadway in 2018, and ran until 2019. It was later adapted as a Netflix original movie which was nominated for an Emmy in 2020. You may have heard us speak about Kenny Leon on our podcast before when talking about August Wilson's plays, and it’s important to note that Kenny Leon directed both the Broadway play and the Film.
Join us for a timely, heavy, yet fun interview about this play and meet the makers of this play at the new Benson Theatre!

Last but definitely not least, Charles James Adams talks to the Platte River Bard. From the era that Sheri and Chris grew up in, it was always a joke that five people make an official party, but in this case, if you add Mr. Adams and his wonderful energy and sense of humor, that makes five, so we were an official party!
And speaking of party, Mr. Adams plays Simon Stimson, a character that is a little bit wild in Thornton Wilder's "Our Town". Mr. Adams is an Actor, Director, and Writer who has toured all over the world with theatre and television. His one-person show, Prattville, opened at the Wells Cultural Center in Lafayette, Indiana. On-screen, he has worked for Apple Tv Plus, AGBO, and The Asylum. He has worked for numerous regional theatre companies, notably for Crossroads Repertory Theatre who he toured through Germany and Poland with in 2014. In 2017 he toured Croatia for the production of Cyrano Debergerac.
It was such a pleasure to meet Charles and he is a riot. So join us for some fun! We were a little out of control, but it was wonderful fun!

Mr. Jain has traveled from New York to be part of this production, and he has performed in theatres all across the country. He has also studied abroad. He has many television and film credits to his name, with one of his recurrent roles from the Amazon Series, "Thespians." You may have even seen him in such Film/TV credits as "WeCrashed" from Apple TV+, "Blue Bloods" from CBS, "Billions" from Showtime, "Girls5Eva" from Peacock, "Gossip Girl" from HBO Max, and "A Ring for Christmas" from UPtv.
And - if you haven't listened to the podcast we just posted with the Director of "Our Town", Arthur Feinsod, we would recommend checking it out and learning more about the production as well as Dr. Feinsod.

What a special treat it was to sit down with Dr. Arthur Feinsod, Guest Director of Our Town at the Nebraska Repertory Theatre that opens April 13th! Dr. Feinsod has served as Artistic Director for Crossroads Repertory Theatre in Terre Haute, Indiana. He also co-founded and served as Artistic Director for Theatre 7 where he staged plays that included Death of a Salesman in the historic Indiana Theatre.
As a Playwright he has written Malcolm’s Call, Table 17, Between the Dams and Coming to See Aunt Sophie. He taught theatre at Trinity College in Hartford, and he served as Resident Dramaturg with the Hartford Stage Company for Mark Lamos and Bartlett Sher. Between 2001 and 2021, he was Professor of Theater at the Honors College at Indiana State University (ISU), where he received the Caleb Mills Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Theodore Dreiser Award for Research and Creativity.
His immense talent and experience has brought us to the re-imagination and inclusion of the story of Our Town. And due to his great working relationship with composer, Craig Woerz, we will see this play with Cragi's newly redeveloped score! We are so privileged to speak with him about this production you won't want to miss that opens April 13th and runs until April 24th. Learn about the amazing history and work to bring this play to our great State, and get your tickets today!

The upcoming production of God on Trial by the Brigit St. Brigit Theatre Company will be an illuminating and fascinating look at a supposed legendary event during World War II of Holocaust prisoners at Auschwitz who decide to put God on trial for breaking his Covenant with the Jewish people. Director and Actor, Murphy Wulfgar (formerly known as Scott Kurz) talks about this moving and powerful play. There is a lot to unpack in this play, and this discussion with Murphy adds so many elements to enhancing our understanding of this production. Murphy is a fascinating and well-spoken seasoned Actor, Writer, and Director who has been involved in numerous productions, and has movie and TV film credits to his name. We are fortunate to discuss this powerful story. It is simply a podcast - and a production - you won't want to miss!

It's our 100th Episode! And we are celebrating by talking with Ron Himes, founder and Producing Director of the St. Louis Black Repertory Company, who graces us with a devised piece, Traveling Shoes, at the Nebraska Repertory Theatre. There are only two performances of this important piece of work which includes poems, prose, dance, and songs to convey the need to have difficult conversations and realizations about contemporary social issues.
Ron also talks with us about his current productions at the St. Louis Black Repertory Company in St. Louis, Missouri, in which the rest of the current season also invokes provocative discussions - and yet, there's still more to hear in our discussion. So listen in to the podcast, come to one (or both) of the performances this weekend March 26th and 27th at the Nebraska Repertory Theatre, and then plan your next trip to St. Louis to see Ron's other illuminating productions!

It's always a treat to meet new talented people, and we were certainly not disappointed in the least when meeting Jill Anderson. Jill is Guest Directing "King Lear" which will be opening at Bluebarn. Jill discusses what will be a fantastic Shakespeare experience, with a large cast packed with local talent, complete with period costumes and an intimate set. We were so fortunate to also not only discuss the works of Shakespeare with Jill, but also to talk about her music and theatre experiences. Jill has her BFA from UNO, and has produced several Celtic music albums including "Cool of the Day" which features 12 Irish and Scottish Songs; "Seven Songs" and "Celtic Cabaret Live." We were even blessed to hear some of her voice in-person, so don't miss this podcast or this production!
Jill's theatrical experience and love for Shakespeare makes her the perfect Director for this play, and we can't wait to see it. It opens March 24th and runs through April 16th. Tickets can be purchased at bluebarn.org.

We speak to Steven Williams, Professor at UNO and Head of Design and Production at UNO, Jocelyn Reed and Aaron Butler, both Co-Producers of the Crossing the Street Festival at UNO and also UNO Fine Arts students. Jocelyn and Aaron produced and directed a festival of plays, poetry and prose which celebrates BIPOC voices and addresses the need for difficult conversations about race, gender, and age - and our human connectedness. The title of the festival has some special origins as well that you'll find out about. So join us to enjoy our conversation with these three talented individuals, and learn about this valuable festival made for all of us to experience together.
"In America we 'Cross the Street' to avoid difficult dialogues, but we also cross the street to engage them. What adventure could be bigger than sharing what we experience, or examining what we don't know? A unique student-directed performance project, Crossing the Street is a festival of short plays, poetry, and spoken word, to provide opportunities to performers across a range of ethnicities, ages, and the gender spectrum."
The Festival performances are March 4, 5, 10, 11, 12 at 7:30PM and Sundays, March 6th and 13th at 2PM at the Weber Fine Arts Theatre. There will be a Preview Performance on March 2nd at 7:30PM. Tickets are available online here: https://www.tix.com/ticket-sales/unotheatre/6817

First time Directors, Rory Nolan and Megan Boggs talk about the Olde Glory Theatre's production of Miracle on 34th Street! Olde Glory Theatre is located in Seward, Nebraska and is a historic church building that was built in 1873. The church was repurposed in 2013 and was intended to host the Goehner Centennial Players Melodrama's dinner theatre which had been formed in 1987. It was later renovated, and in 2015 became a non-profit theatre and often holds theatre from touring theatre groups.
This year Olde Glory is celebrating the holidays with their production of Miracle on 34th Street. With a large cast - and a Santa in his 80's - this production is sure to warm the hearts of families celebrating together. And if you catch it just right, you might be able to get dinner or dessert there to warm your stomach as well!

Each summer Brownville employs 12-15 theatre students from all over the Midwest, and gives them intensive experience in every aspect of producing theatre. However, their Christmas musical, The Sanders Family Christmas, is a funny and down home Christmas musical and celebration of church life and bluegrass music. We speak with Ron Himes, Director of the Nebraska Repertory Theatre’s production of “Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea” November 10-21st. This play, written by Nathan Alan Davis, is a coming-of-age story, and is yet another successful collaboration with the The St. Louis Black Repertory Company, in which Ron founded. His credits and experience are quite extensive, but we hope we can at least give you a glimpse of his talent and his vast contribution to the national theatre community. It is also an example of the commitment to amplifying voices that the Nebraska Repertory Theatre, under Christina Kirks' (Director of the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film) fine leadership and collaboration, brings to our state - and something we are so thankful for.

When We Go Away, stories about Nebraska Holocaust Survivors on November 14th at 2PM. The stories of Holocaust survivors Dr. Fred Kader, Rachel Rosenberg, Helena Tichauer, and Katherine Williams are interwoven into this new play written by playwright J.R. Dawson and commissioned by the Institute for Holocaust Education. Using minimal sets and costuming, the play asks us to focus on the stories, how they connect to each other, to us, and ultimately what will happen when the storytellers go away. Both a call to remember and to act, When We Go Away not only informs the audience but asks it to become part of the story.
Fran is such a pleasure to talk with and his work is so important to Nebraska artists. Don't miss these two productions that are bound to tug at your heart.

Christina Kirk serves as the Executive Director of the Nebraska Repertory Theatre and as Director of the Johnny Carson School of Theatre & Film. Ms. Kirk brings a wide array of expertise to the theatre, including teaching, directing, performing, and overseeing the entire program makes the Nebraska Repertory Theatre an inclusive, diverse, and full, year-round regional theatre operation. Prior to taking the leadership position at UNL, she was Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Otterbein University where she had taught since 1992.
Ms. Kirk began her performing career at the Nebraska Repertory Theatre, but has performed and directed all over the country, including the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, the Illinois Repertory Theatre, CATCO (Contemporary American Theatre Company), Heartland Theatre Company, just to name a few. She has also been a contributing author in two theatre texts, The Art of Directing and Acting in the Space in between.
Ms. Kirk has an M.F.A. in Directing from Columbia University in the city of New York and a B.F.A. in Acting from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.
There could not be a more perfect fit for directing the Nebraska Repertory Theatre's production, A Midsummer Night's Dream which opens September 29th and runs through October 10th! The production will be a refreshing and modern take on William Shakespeare's story and promises to deliver clever characters and costumes, relatable stories and the enthusiasm and fun from a cast who have missed the stage, as much as the theatre community has missed joining them in their story.
