The Lincoln Community Playhouse in Lincoln, Nebraska is honored to host a World Premiere, and winner of the American Association of Community Theatres New Play Fest, The China Shop, written by Richard Manley.  The play opened November 8th and had a sold out audience on Sunday November 10th. There is now one week left to see this award winning play!  Richard Manley, Playwright, was in town for us to talk with and Director, Jamie Bullins and Actor Victoria Lininger and our own Chris Berger joined him to talk about producing this wonderful play.

"The China Shop is a smart romantic comedy about the surprising moments of life that are, as Virginia Woolf once said, "...little daily miracles...matches struck unexpectedly in the dark".
In The China Shop, the matches are Derby, a sort of once famous poet, and Mary, an award-winning advertising writer. By chance, they become neighbors and the volley of words - and matches - light up!"
This play is for mature audiences.

For tickets and information, go to www.lincolnplayhouse.com!  Show dates remaining are November 15, 16, & 17.

Clay Farris Naff is a recently accomplished playwright who is debuting his new play The Cleanup Lady.   Clay is an author, and has been an award winning journalist, a correspondent for the United Press International in Tokyo, a freelance reporter for National Public Radio, Newsweek, Huffington Post, Earth Magazine, The Humanist, and Scientific American, just to name a few.  He has been a science-and-religion correspondent for the Metanexus Institute, and the Executive Director of Lincoln Literacy.
He is a Nebraska gem, and in the last few years has added Playwright to this long list of achievements.  Last year he debuted part of his first play which you may have heard about or seen Mix and Machinate which addresses the tribalized nature about what we’ve become, all taking place at a local public radio station.  Part of this play debuted last summer at the 2023 First Flight Festival , and the full play went on to be performed at the 2023 Omaha Fringe Festival.
Clay is now debuting his new play, The Cleanup Lady (When AI Strikes You Need the Cleanup Lady), which is about a company that uses an AI machine to invest in other people's money, except all of the guardrails to ensure the money is being invested with honest investors has been removed.
The Cleanup Lady will be performed at the 2024 Omaha Fringe Festival August 9-11th at the Benson Theatre,  one of the Omaha Fringe’s four venues.
There will also be a Preview Performance in Lincoln on August 4th at Eastmont Senior Living Center and open to the public.
Join us for this enjoyable conversation with the talented Clay Farris Naff about his new play.  You won’t want to miss it!

We met with Co-Directors, Rachel Curtiss, and Mitch Bean, and then spoke to three of their Cast Members:  Bella Walker (also Intimacy Coordinator, Assistant Director), Jack Danter and Rachel Grossman.  All of the cast members get experience doing all things behind the scenes as well as their roles on stage.  It takes the whole crew to make BVT work and they are having fun!

We talk with a few of the young actors in this musical, Shemar "Mar" Toussaint, McKenna Cottone, and Nick Knipe.   They are the young stars of "Heathers The Muscial" at SNAP! Productions which opens June 7th.  Productions will run until June 23rd with one Industry Night (pay what you can) on June 17th.
Our guests are having a blast and working hard at their roles in this play.  For those who haven't heard, "Heathers, The Musical" has been a very popular play these days and was the inspiration for the movie "Mean GIrls."  The lyrics and book was written by Laurence O'Keefe and Kevin Murphy, and has been a hit since 2014.  It hits on such subjects as bullying, school violence and some other dark humor and is packed full of beloved songs, and  embraces the 80's nostalgic era.
Come see this energetic and influential play, it opens June 7th at SNAP! Productions Ghost Light Theatre!

We had a fun visit with Rachel Robbins, Producer, Director, Actor, and Theatre Educator of Popcorn Productions, LLC's Melodramas and her team of actors:  Ian Cullin, Samantha Desh, Shade Ingraham, Elizabeth Maack, and Collette Williams.  We also spoke to their Lighting and Sound Designer, Zach Wasserman, as well as one of the youngest ensemble members, Weston.
Melodramas just opened their three new shows for Part 1 of their 2024 season which runs from May 24th to August 25th!  Their new shows are:
B Mine Forever by John Burkhart
Gary Botter and the Divining Sphere by Julie Eischleman
The Phantom of Darkgrove by D. Chapelle
Popcorn Productions' Melodramas are fun, rowdy, and a completely different theatre experience than the usual live theatre experience.  Guests are expected to "boo" the villain and "aww" the hero or heroine.  And guests can also opt to throw popcorn or dollar bills (of any $ value of their choosing).  Actors are expected to pick up the tips and continue on with their lines.  These productions are a mixture of theatre and improv, each performance being a different experience with so much crowd interaction.
Shows are inside the Denman and Mary Mallory Kountze Memorial Theatre at the Mahoney State Park.  Concessions are available and tickets can be purchased online or at the door.  Also the building is air conditioned and has all the indoor amenities.  So if you are out at Mahoney State Park it is a great escape from the outdoors and enjoy theatre!

We sat down with Director Todd Brooks,  Stage Manager Krista Freimuth, and Actor Adam Fulbright to talk about Chanticleer's upcoming production "A Chorus Line."  This is a cohesive cast who are working hard but having the time of their lives, which of course, is everything community theatre should be.  This is going to be a fun production, with a live orchestra, much dancing and singing with all the classic "A Chorus Line" tunes and dance moves!
Though "A Chorus LIne" was also adapted into a popular movie in 1985, for most people the story is best told on stage. The original musical was written in 1975 by Marvin Hamlisch, with lyrics by Edward Kleban, and directed by Michael Bennett.  It won many Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award, a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and in 1984 won a Tony for longest running musical on Broadway.  (It is currently the 7th longest running musical to date).  The "Book" (librettists of the spoken, non-sung dialogue, and storyline of a musical play) was written by James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante.
The story is based on true stories and is set on the stage of a Broadway theater, and centered on seventeen Broadway dancers auditioning for roles on a chorus line.
"A Chorus Line" runs May 9-12th and 16-19th at Chanticleer Community Theatre at PACE.  This is a great opportunity to see this prize winning musical!

We had the distinct pleasure of meeting Thom Davis, Dramaturg and Vice President of the Board of Directors for Voices in Alliance (VIA Omaha).  VIA Omaha produced “The Inheritance Part 1” in October 2023 during their first season, and now are able to begin their 2nd Season with “The Inheritance Part 2.”
It's important to note that you can still easily see “The Inheritance Part 2” without seeing "Part 1".  We do suggest, however, you hear all about "Part 2" on our podcast before you go, because Thom eloquently explains why this is such an important piece of theatre.
This two-part play was written by Matthew Lopez and won a Tony Award, the Drama Desk Award, a Laurence Olivier Award, a Critics Circle Theatre Award, and an Evening Standard Theatre Award, and a GLAAD Media Award, just to name a few.  Needless to say, there has always been a lot of interest and appreciation in what this play means to so many.
”The Inheritance Part 2”opens May 10th and runs 8 performances until May 19th.  There will be a talk back session after their Sunday performance on May 12th.
This production is recommended for audiences over 18.

Today our episode is with an Omaha theatre legendary favorite, the talented Dick Mueller.  This is one of those podcasts you simply won't want to miss if you love theatre in Nebraska.  The Firehouse Dinner Theatre, founded and produced by Dick Mueller was a Old Market staple.  Mr. Mueller opened the Firehouse Dinner Theatre May 12th 1972.  Back in its day, the Firehouse was one of the best of equity theatre in Omaha.  And to recall of the great times there, Dick Mueller has published a book, written by himself and 25 others who worked at the Firehouse.  All of them share about their most memorable moments.
Mr. Mueller's book is called “The Firehouse Memoir:  For an Entreprener in the Arts, From Nightclubs to Theatre, ’Twas All Showbiz to Me."  And to celebrate there will be a Book Launch Party at the old Firehouse building, now the Upstream Brewery on Sunday, April 21st from 2PM - 5PM.  Stop on in to what is sure to be a festive reunion at the book launch, get a signed copy and see so many of the people who made the Firehouse so successful!

Is an egg is as close to Jesus as a person can get?
We had a "sunny-side-up of a time" with Director Kaitlyn Rudeen, and Actors Julie Fitzgerald Ryan and Sarah Dighans while talking about their upcoming production:  5 Lesbians Eating A Quiche, which opens April 5th at SNAP! Productions Omaha at Ghost Light Theatre in Bellevue.
This is a zany comedy you won't want to miss with a spontaneous and whacky fourth wall.  An all female Cast, Director and Crew tell the story of five women living in 1956 who belong to the Susan B. Anthony Society for the Sisters of Gertrude Stein and are having their annual quiche breakfast (yes, it's that time of year again!) when their small town is threatened by Communists.  What could go wrong with this perfectly hatched plot?
This is an interactive production that will whip up and bake the crowd into a perfectly flaky crust of antics for 90 minutes of non-stop comedy.
5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche was the winner of the 2012 NYC International Fringe Festival for best overall production and written by Evan Linder and Andrew Hobgood.

Performances will be April 5-7, 12 - 15, 19 - 21.
Industry Night is Monday, April 15th.

The Theatre Arts Guild Omaha (TAG) has been around for over 50 years, but through a series of events, including the pandemic, TAG is in jeopardy of dissolving.  We talk with Dylan Peck, current President of TAG, and discuss what might happen to the organization going forward.  Dylan has been keeping the organization going in hopes it will be able to continue and grow and offer more scholarships for theatre Creatives.
To join TAG, just $1 will purchase a membership, which can be completed on their website.  Some TAG Night Out events (suggested donation of $5) are still happening, and Dylan hopes to resurrect TAG Meet-ups and other events for members.
Find all about it here and how you can join the TAG Board, or join as member to support Creatives in Omaha!

OmniArts Nebraska is gearing up to open their first production of the year, and their 12th season in 2024.  This production isn't holding anything back and we spoke to two of the talented individuals involved in this play: Christian Novotny, Director - and Reed Westerhoff, who plays the main character, John.
This play, though visually simplistic in design and execution, is complex in story.  John finds himself torn between his steady relationship with his boyfriend, and suddenly finds himself in love with a woman. There are only four actors performing in this play, along with Reed Westerhoff, the other actors are Stephen Buhler, Anthony Delaney, and Francoise Traxler.  Costume design is by Sandra Zulkoski, Amelia Roth is stage manager, and technical direction is by Dustin Witte.
We had a lovely conversation with Christian and Reed about this play at The Mill at Innovation Campus, so join us in this podcast to learn more about them and this dramatic play.  COCK won a Laurence Olivier Award in 2010 for an Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre.
COCK opens February 22nd and runs through the 25th at the Johnny Carson Theater at the Lied Center for Performing Arts.  It does contain adult themes and sexually explicit dialogue.

We spoke with Moira Mangiameli, Director of "Boy" at Snap Productions at the Ghost Light Theatre, and Actor Jey Nelson, who plays Samantha and Adam as the lead role in Boy, which is opening February 2nd.
Moiria and Jey talk to us about this complex play written by Anna Zeigler.  The play is based on a true story of a person who was born male and due to a tragic accident during his circumcision, was raised female.  The well-intentioned plan came from the doctor, who believed gender was based on how a person is nurtured, rather than on purely nature. As the main character grows up, unaware of all of the facts about their past, they battle emotionally with their feelings about themselves and try to reconcile with the information they have been told.
Performance dates for “Boy” are February 2nd through the 4th, 9th through the 12th, (the 12th is a Monday performance for the convenience of people in the industry), and 16th through the 18th.
Snap! is holding valuable talkbacks after the February 2nd and 9th performances.
The ASL performance will be February 9th.

Angels Theatre Company just announced their 2023-2024 Season and we had the honor of talking with Timothy Scholl, Executive Director!
Angels offers a wide array of programming for new works.  They have their full-length season productions, which are newer plays written by local playwrights.  The Solo Tales and Ales program allows the Playwriting Collective to write monologues, which are then performed by actors as a cold read.  In addition, their Playwriting Collective gives workshop support to local playwrights wanting to enrich their work and prepare it for performance. And lastly, they have their Salon Reading Series, which are new works that can include those plays who have been developed in the Playwriting Workshop, and then are performed as staged readings.
So for Angels, it's not just a handful of plays for the season, it's many plays in many formats.  So if you love new works, or if you are a playwright looking for development,  Angels has something for everyone.  Check out all the exciting things in store for next season!

Artistic Director, Kevin Colbert of the Lofte Community Theatre and Actor, Jennifer Gilg talk with us about their upcoming play, Wit, ("W;t") written by Margaret Edson.  This play won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize, and is a heartfelt play is about a strong and intelligent woman, Vivian Bearing (played by Jennifer Gilg) who realizes she is in the last two hours of her life due to her battle with ovarian cancer.  But don't let the premise scare you away!  This play is full of heart and humor as Vivian explores what makes life worth living, what achievements look like when faced with the reality of death, and how relationships are such an important part of every humans' story.
And if the writing and acting of this play isn't already enough, Jennifer Gilg, an accomplished local actor, went "all in."  We talked to her just hours after she had her head shaved for this role and she carried on brilliantly.  She has taken this role on and owned it.  So join us for a great conversation with more talented local Creatives who are bringing everything they have to this endearing play.
Wit opens May 5th at the Lofte Community Theatre and runs until May 14th.

What a lovely conversation with two talented Creatives, Ellen Struve and Amy Lane, PhD.  You'll hear their incredible friendship and collaboration on Ellen's staged reading of Old Bat.  This play is co-produced by Benson Theatre and the Great Play Theatre Commons PlayFest and is a free staged reading on March 23rd and 24th at the Benson Theatre.  This staged reading has been reimagined into a different style of staged readings and it is sure to lure you in to another world and story.
Ellen's fanciful style and realistic perspectives will become centerstage in this fun play.  We talk about her process of writing plays, and how she and Amy became friends.
It’s always an honor to talk with local Creatives who have brought so much to our Arts Community and to see Benson Theatre and Great Plains Theatre Commons collaborate for local playwrights.

The excitement is brewing!  Opera Omaha is ending this season with The Marriage of Figaro, and we had a lovely conversation with Michael Adams and Mary Feminear, who play the Count and the Countess in this beloved opera.  Mary and Michael are married in real life as well as their characters onstage, and it made for a great interview.  Our conversation was cut short because of technical problems, and we hope to talk with them again in the future.
Both of these Creatives are immensely experienced and talented and it was an honor to talk with them.
Don't miss this famous and timeless opera, which is Directed by Dean Anthony and Conducted by Steven White.
Performances are March 31st and April 2nd and ticket prices begin at $19. You can get your tickets to this beloved opera, The Marriage of Figaro at ticketomaha.com.
Opera Omaha also offers their Opera in Conversation, The Art of Comedy: "Comedic Tropes at Types" which will be held at the Blackstone Theatre March 21st at 6PM.  And for a talkback after the opera, Opera in Conversation:  "After The Curtain Call" on April 4th at the Benson Theatre at 6PM.  These events are free of charge.

Emily A. Rollie Ph.D., Director of Men on Boats at UNO Theatre talks about this history reimagined production made up of non-binary and female cast members!  In addition, we learned about her other role as an Intimacy Choreographer, which is timely and a newer concept to the theatre stage.  Dr. Rollie also serves as an Educator and Faculty Member of the Washington Central State University theatre department, as well as an Associate Faculty Member for Theatrical Intimacy Education.  She has written numerous articles, has served as an Artistic Director at the Independent Actors Theatre, and has a Master's Degree in Theatre at Central Washington University and her Ph.D. at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Dr. Rollie has many more credits and talents to her name and can be found on her website:  https://www.emilyrollie.com/.  And suffice to say, she has brought her vast talents to this production at UNO Theatre.  In addition, it's perfect timing, since March is Women's History Month to bring such a talented female to our state who has been a resource and advocate for women in theatre, and a gender and sexuality educator.  She was the Assistant Director of Troubling Violence Performance Project (TVPP) a group dedicated to opening lines of communication about issues of relationship violence through the performance of personal narratives.
There's so much to unpack here:  Men On Boats is a history reimagined play about the 1869 exploration of what is known today as the Grand Canyon, as well as learning about Intimacy Choreography from such a talented Creative.  Join us for a great conversation with Emily A. Rollie, Ph.D.!
Men On Boats by Jacklyn Backhaus opens February 23rd through March 5th.
Performances are February 23-25th, and March 2-4 at 7:30PM; and Feb 26 and March 5th at 2PM.

Join us for a fun and interesting conversation about how this new play came together! Local playwright, Brigid Amos premieres her new play, Dove, with the Angels Theatre Company.  We also talk with Director of Dove, Jamie Bullins, who is also the Associate Professor of Theatre for the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film, and we talk with Timothy Scholl, the Executive Artistic Director of the Angels Theatre Company.  Angels Theatre Company cultivates local playwrighters and Brigid Amos has been working on this play in conjunction with ASOTO (A Stage Of Their Own) as well as her collaboration with Angels and Jamie Bullins to bring Dove to us!

The Bard crashed the rehearsals of the Benson Theatre, and had the rewarding opportunity to talk with Kathy Tyree, Jared Cernousek, Kerri Forrester, and Moira Mangiameli!  Their show "American Son" opens Thursday, August 18th and will run from the 18th-21st and the 27th-29th.  Join us for some really deep conversations about race and perspective in this show, which was written by Christopher Demos-Brown.  We were so honored to talk with Director, and Omaha's Queen of Soul, Kathy Tyree;  the talented classical singer and now Actor, Kerri Forrester; the recent UNO Graduate of Theatre and Directing, Jared Cernousek, and the Benson Theatre's Executive Assistant, Moira Mangiameli.  Moira tells us about the new Benson Theatre and it's creation, orchestrated by Executive and Founding Director, Amy Ryan.
American Son made its world premiere at Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, MA in June 2016. The play won the 2016 Laurents/Hatcher Award for Best New Play by an Emerging Playwright.  It then premiered on Broadway in 2018, and ran until 2019.   It was later adapted as a Netflix original movie which was nominated for an Emmy in 2020.  You may have heard us speak about Kenny Leon on our podcast before when talking about August Wilson's plays, and it’s important to note that  Kenny Leon directed both the Broadway play and the Film.
Join us for a timely, heavy, yet fun interview about this play and meet the makers of this play at the new Benson Theatre!

Last but definitely not least, Charles James Adams talks to the Platte River Bard.  From the era that Sheri and Chris grew up in,  it was always a joke that five people make an official party, but in this case, if you add Mr. Adams and his wonderful energy and sense of humor, that makes five, so we were an official party!
And speaking of party, Mr. Adams plays Simon Stimson, a character that  is a little bit wild in Thornton Wilder's "Our Town".  Mr. Adams is an Actor, Director, and Writer who has toured all over the world with theatre and television. His one-person show, Prattville, opened at the Wells Cultural Center in Lafayette, Indiana.  On-screen, he has worked for Apple Tv Plus, AGBO, and The Asylum.  He has worked for numerous regional theatre companies, notably for Crossroads Repertory Theatre who he toured through Germany and Poland with in 2014.  In 2017 he toured Croatia for the production of Cyrano Debergerac.
It was such a pleasure to meet Charles and he is a riot. So join us for some fun!   We were a little out of control, but it was wonderful fun!

Jain, theatrical, tv and film Actor, is an inspiration to all Creatives young and old!  Today in our podcast, he shares his story about Acting full-time.  Mr. Jain is currently in the production "Our Town" at the Nebraska Repertory Theatre, and he plays Dr. Gibbs in this newly reimagined and inclusive version of Thornton Wilder's play.  In addition, the play contains a newly revised score which adds life to this heartwarming story (more on that soon!).
This is the next in a series of several podcasts that we are releasing of some of the cast and crew of "Our Town."
Mr. Jain has traveled from New York to be part of this production, and he has performed in theatres all across the country.  He has also studied abroad.  He has many television and film credits to his name, with one of his recurrent roles from the Amazon Series, "Thespians."  You may have even seen him in such Film/TV credits as "WeCrashed" from Apple TV+, "Blue Bloods" from CBS, "Billions" from Showtime, "Girls5Eva" from Peacock, "Gossip Girl" from HBO Max, and "A Ring for Christmas" from UPtv.
And - if you haven't listened to the podcast we just posted with the Director of "Our Town", Arthur Feinsod, we would recommend checking it out and learning more about the production as well as Dr. Feinsod.

What a special treat it was to sit down with Dr. Arthur Feinsod, Guest Director of Our Town at the Nebraska Repertory Theatre that opens April 13th!  Dr. Feinsod has served as Artistic Director for Crossroads Repertory Theatre in Terre Haute, Indiana. He also co-founded and served as Artistic Director for Theatre 7 where he staged plays that included Death of a Salesman in the historic Indiana Theatre.
As a Playwright he has written Malcolm’s Call, Table 17, Between the Dams and Coming to See Aunt Sophie.  He taught theatre at Trinity College in Hartford, and he served as Resident Dramaturg with the Hartford Stage Company for Mark Lamos and Bartlett Sher.  Between 2001 and 2021, he was Professor of Theater at the Honors College at Indiana State University (ISU), where he received the Caleb Mills Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Theodore Dreiser Award for Research and Creativity.
His immense talent and experience has brought us to the re-imagination and inclusion of the story of Our Town.  And due to his great working relationship with composer, Craig Woerz, we will see this play with Cragi's newly redeveloped score! We are so privileged to speak with him about this production you won't want to miss that opens April 13th and runs until April 24th.  Learn about the amazing history and work to bring this play to our great State, and get your tickets today!
